If you typed "night nurse near me" into Google at 3 a.m. while bouncing a baby who is absolutely not sleeping, welcome. You're in the right place. (And you're in very good company.)
Here's the truth: night nurse, night nanny and overnight doula get tossed around like they all mean the same thing. They don't. Knowing the difference helps you book the help your family actually needs.
A little confession first: I started as a night nanny. In 2018, I stepped in to finish supporting a family when their night nanny moved away. I had no plans to make it a career. That one family turned into eight years of overnights, a doula certification and Blissful Sleep Doulas. So I've seen this from every side.
What Is a Night Nurse?
A true night nurse is a licensed nurse, usually an RN or LPN. They can handle medical needs, like a baby coming home from the NICU who needs medical monitoring or treatment.
Here's the catch: many people advertised as "night nurses" aren't nurses at all. It's an older term that just stuck around. If your baby has medical needs, ask to see a nursing license. If they don't, you probably want one of the next two.
What Is a Night Nanny?
A night nanny takes the overnight shift with your baby: feeds, diapers, burps and settling back to sleep. Many are very experienced, but there's no required training or certification. The focus is the baby.
If all you need is someone to cover nights so you can sleep, a night nanny can be a great fit.
What Is an Overnight Postpartum Doula?
An overnight postpartum doula is trained to support the baby AND the parents. You get everything a night nanny does, plus:
Baby brought to you for feeds if you're breastfeeding or chestfeeding, then settled back to sleep
Feeding support, whether it's breast, bottle, pumping or a mix
Bottles and pump parts washed and ready to go
Notes on every feed, diaper and wake-up waiting for you in the morning
Real answers to the questions you didn't want to bother your pediatrician with
Someone who notices how YOU are doing, not just the baby
Doulas are non-medical. We don't diagnose or treat. We do know when something needs a call to your provider, and we'll tell you.
The best part? We teach you the "why" behind what works. Little tricks that feel like second nature to us can feel like magic at 2 a.m. By the end, you're not just rested. You're confident.
What About a Newborn Care Specialist (NCS)?
A Newborn Care Specialist focuses on the baby, often for longer stretches and with a focus on routines and early sleep habits. Think of an NCS as a night nanny with specialized newborn training. Blissful Sleep Doulas offers NCS support too.
So Which One Do You Need?
Your baby has medical needs: a licensed night nurse.
You just need nights covered: a night nanny or a Newborn Care Specialist.
You want sleep AND support for yourself: an overnight postpartum doula.
(Most parents who ask me for a night nurse in their first email actually want the third one. They just didn't know the word yet.)
What Your First Overnight Looks Like
Your doula shows up in the evening and you walk through the basics together: how your baby likes to be held, how feeding is going, anything that's worrying you. Then you go to bed. For real.
If you're feeding at the breast or chest, your doula brings the baby to you and takes over again after. If you're bottle feeding, you might not wake up at all. In the morning, you get the full report and a chance to ask anything.
One More Thing: Safe Sleep
Whoever you hire, ask how they handle safe sleep. Babies should sleep on their back, in a bare crib or bassinet, with no blankets, bumpers, pillows or stuffed animals. Anyone you trust with your baby overnight should follow this without being asked. (I'm a Cribs for Kids Safe Sleep Ambassador, so yes, I'll be that person.)
Let's Get You Some Sleep
Blissful Sleep Doulas matches families across Massachusetts and Rhode Island with overnight and daytime postpartum doulas, each one hand-selected and vetted.
Not sure which kind of help you need? That's exactly what I'm here for. Share your due date or your baby's age, and we'll figure it out together.
